During this year’s New York Comic Con, I was fortunate enough to listen to Jeaniene Frost, along with a few other authors, talking about writing novels and changes they had to make to their own stories so it might capture an agent’s attention. She doesn’t disappoint since the first chapter starting off with her main character, Catherine, caught in a situation many of us wouldn’t want to be in. The character’s voice through out the story is very well done and is pretty much consistent for the whole book. The actions scenes are well written out and you can tell by reading the book that the author clearly did her research.
And then of course, there’s the romance. The main love interest, Bones, is quite likeable and still manages to be a badass while being a goofball at the same time, a trait I personally admire (don’t want every character to be too dark and brooding). The chemistry between him and Catherine is hilarious yet sexy and yet you can’t help but think they make an adorable couple.
Most of the flaws that I picked up while reading this book had more to do with personal taste than with how the author told the story. One example is that for me, the reader finds out about her past and what makes her who she is a little too quickly within the first few pages. I also could have done without one particular intimacy scene and involves Catherine being alone. Other then that, it was an enjoyable read and a great start to a series.
